Seam photographs a place before you leave it, and again when you come back. Then it shows you what is different.

Getting started

  1. New Trap. A trap is one place you want to watch — a hotel room, a storage unit, a workbench. Name it yourself, or tap Use My Location to name it after the address.
  2. Set Baseline. Photograph the place as you are leaving it. The camera meters and focuses automatically here, so the baseline is simply a good photograph.
  3. Run Sweep. When you come back, the baseline appears on screen as a ghost and the camera locks itself to the settings the baseline used. Line the ghost up and shoot.
  4. Read the pair. The two photographs appear side by side, joined at a seam.

The four instruments

All four run on your iPhone. None of them needs an account, a key or a network.

  • Wipe — drag the handle on the seam to bring one photograph across the other.
  • Hold — press and hold anywhere on the pair to see the other frame whole. Release to come back.
  • Blink — alternates the two at a fixed interval. The eye is unusually good at catching a change this way.
  • Difference — washes the frame amber wherever the two photographs genuinely disagree, with a slider to set how sensitive it is.

Why the second photograph copies the first

Seam locks the sweep to the baseline's exposure, white balance, focus, lens and zoom. Without that, a room that merely got darker between the two visits would read as a room that changed. Matching the settings is what makes the comparison mean anything.

This is also why the baseline meters automatically but the sweep does not: the baseline decides the settings, and the sweep obeys them.

Common questions

It says “Frames roughly aligned”, or “Frames could not be aligned”

Beneath the pair, Seam prints how well it managed to line the sweep up against the baseline, together with the residual it measured. “Roughly aligned” usually means you stood in a noticeably different spot, or at a different angle, from where the baseline was taken. Run another sweep from closer to the original position — the ghost is there to help you find it — and the reading will improve. Extra sweeps do not replace the old ones; you can compare any of them.

The difference map shows nothing, but I can see something changed

Drag the sensitivity slider up. Seam is deliberately conservative: it discards anything a small camera movement could explain, and anything a change of light could explain, and it compares only the part both photographs actually cover. A change right at the edge of the frame may fall outside that overlap.

The difference map lights up almost everywhere

Usually the camera moved a long way between the two photographs, or the light changed dramatically — full sun to overcast, or daylight to a lamp. Try a sweep taken closer to the baseline's position. The instrument strip shows the noise floor it measured, so you can see for yourself how much of the frame is simply uncertain.

Do I need an API key?

No. The wipe, the hold, the blink and the difference map all work without one, on the device, offline. The AI comparison is an optional extra.

What is the AI comparison, and what does it cost?

If you want the pair described in words, Seam can send the two photographs to OpenAI, Anthropic or Moonshot, using your own API key. That key is separate from a ChatGPT or Claude subscription and is billed to you by the provider. It is stored in your iPhone's Keychain, sent only to the provider it belongs to, and never synced or backed up — a new phone needs it pasted in again.

Before anything is sent, Seam names the recipient and asks you to confirm, and it strips all metadata from both photographs. The name you gave the place is not sent. No location is sent.

My traps are not appearing on my other device

Check that Mirror Traps to iCloud is on in Settings, and that both devices are signed in to the same Apple account. The status line at the top of the traps list says what the sync is doing, and Settings shows the last sync error if there was one. Nothing is lost while sync is off — everything stays on the device and uploads when it can.

How do I delete everything?

Deleting a trap removes its photographs from the device and from iCloud. Remove Copies from iCloud in Settings clears the cloud copies while your device keeps everything. Deleting the app removes everything it stored locally.

Photographs taken outdoors, hours apart

Locked exposure can only do so much when the sun has moved. Seam's difference map already discards what a change of light can explain, but a hard shadow that was not there before is a real difference in the picture, and Seam will show it. That is a judgement for you, not for the app.

What Seam does not do

Seam does not tell you what a change means, and it will never advise you about your safety. It reports what it can measure and leaves every conclusion to you.
